SIM-only or a new phone?

If your current phone still works well, a SIM-only plan is usually the cheapest option, and Black Friday often brings some of the year's cheapest unlimited data plans. If you do want a new handset, compare the total you'll pay over the contract (upfront cost plus every monthly payment) with buying the phone outright and adding a SIM-only plan.

Price rises are now in pounds and pence

Since January 2025, Ofcom rules mean that any price rise built into a mobile contract has to be set out in pounds and pence when you sign up, rather than linked to inflation. Check what the monthly price becomes each year before you choose between deals.

Last year's flagship phones also tend to drop in price once newer models launch, so if you don't need the very latest, an older model can be the better buy.
