Is Black Friday really the cheapest time?
The research is mixed. Which? tracked prices for a year around the 2024 sale and found that eight in ten Black Friday deals were the same price or cheaper at other times. MoneySavingExpert, comparing Black Friday 2024 with the run-up to Christmas, found 37 of 50 popular items were cheaper on Black Friday. So Black Friday often beats December, but not necessarily the rest of the year.
How to tell a real deal
- Check the product's price history on a price-tracking site, rather than trusting the "was" price.
- Compare the full model number across retailers. Versions sold at Black Friday can differ slightly from the standard model.
- Look for price promises. Some retailers, such as Currys, have refunded the difference if the price drops again before a set date, but you usually have to claim it.
