Look past the free months

Three free months is a real saving, but these are 24-month contracts, and the monthly price rises each April. Last year's 264Mbps broadband deal, for example, was free for three months, then £24.99 a month, rising by £4 each April during the contract. Work out what you'll pay over the full two years and compare that figure, not the first bill.

Switching from another provider

Virgin Media also offered up to £200 towards the cost of leaving a contract early. If you're still tied in elsewhere, check what your current provider charges to leave before assuming the buyout covers it.

Its winter sale, which followed at the end of December, had offers similar to the Black Friday ones, so if you miss the window you may not have missed out.
